Topic: “Modern Implantology, Prosthodontic Approaches to a Biological Challenge"
Course Description:
Treating patients with dental implants is a popular approach now-a-days, but patients have become more demanding as they want restorations that emulate natural dentition.
Prosthetically-driven treatment planning is critical in predicting functional, biologic, and esthetic success in implant cases. One of the more complex areas of treatment with dental implants is the soft tissue-restorative interphase, for this transition zone to be esthetic and biologically stable a series of conditions must be met. Proper provisionalization, prosthetic design, material selection and a clear understanding of biology are key for clinicians to achieve desirable results. In this lecture, the clinician will be exposed to protocols which will help treatment plan, and execute implant cases in an organized and straightforward manner to increase their success in this type of therapy.
Session 1: Treatment Planning the Implant Patient
In this session Patient selection and important perio-prosthodontic considerations for treatment planning implant cases will be discussed. The participant will be exposed to important concepts when treatment planning the patient in need of dental implants.
Learning Objectives Session 1:
- Identify important considerations for adequate treatment planning in esthetic implant therapy
- Understand the treatment strategies associated with the initial condition of the patient
- Learn the essential perio-prosthodontic principles for proper soft tissue response
Session 2: Abutment Design and Biological Response
In this session the relationship between implant position and abutment design will be discussed. Also, the participant will be exposed to important mechanical and biological considerations to abutment design.
Learning Objectives Session 2:
- Understand the relationship between 3D implant placement and prosthetic design.
- Understand the importance of the different areas of the emergence profile and learn different techniques to condition the soft tissues.
- Understand important mechanical and biologic parameters of prosthetic design

He received his dental training at Universidad Americana in his hometown of Managua, Nicaragua. After graduating from dental school, he joined his father’s practice for four years. Due to his growing interest in prosthetics, he decided to pursue a specialty training in prosthodontics at LSUSD, completing the residency in 2013.
