Past Monthly Meetings

The DCDS offers regular, complimentary CE programming to its members each year between September and May. Monthly meetings are usually on the second Tuesday of the month (depending on holidays and other events). In addition to learning the latest innovations and techniques in dentistry from world-renowned speakers from across the country, DCDS monthly meetings give attendees an opportunity to share ideas, information and network with one another. Nonmembers may attend DCDS monthly meetings for a small fee.

In a particularly litigious district of an already litigious country, managing risk is critically important to effective patient care and a successful practice. Don’t wait for personal experience with a malpractice claim to learn the most effective ways to protect your patients – and your practice. Enhance your understanding of fundamental risk management principals and increase your knowledge of recurring malpractice and regulatory claim themes and pitfalls. The topics discussed during the course include:

  • Documentation & consent
  • Patient discharge, refunds, informed refusal 
  • Emerging risk issues

Learning Objectives:

After Attending the Managing Dental Professional Liability Risk seminar, participants should be able to:

  • Identify procedures associated with frequent and high-expense malpractice claims
  • Implement a team approach to patient safety and risk management practices
  • Effectively apply the informed consent process to improve patient understanding, safety and satisfaction
  • Develop and implement methods to document and assess adverse outcomes and patient dissatisfaction
  • Assess the risk management implications of various doctor-patient interactions, including informed refusal and patient termination
  • Implement record keeping practices that enhance patient care and reduce malpractice risks.
  • Understand how the standard of care and negligence apply to dental professional liability

About the Speaker: Andrew Gerner

E. Andrew Gerner, CFP® is President and an equity member of the insurance firm R. K. Tongue Co., Inc.  He is also Principal and Founder of the investment and financial services firm Tongue | GERNER Financial Services, LLC.  Mr. Gerner is a property & casualty and life & health licensed independent insurance agent and broker, a series 7 and 66 Investment Adviser, and a Certified Financial Planner TM.  He specializes in risk management, asset protection, wealth management, retirement, and financial planning for members of the healthcare and professional services industries.  He has lectured regionally to dentists, dental students, medical residents, optometrists, insurance professionals, and financial advisors on various risk management, financial, and insurance-related topics.  He received undergraduate degrees in Economics and Public Policy from St. Mary’s College of Maryland where he graduated Cum Laude.  Mr. Gerner continues to study professionally within the insurance and financial services industry at The College for Financial Planning.  Additionally, Mr. Gerner sits on the State Administrator Advisory Board of the Professional Protector Plan® for Dentists, one of the Nation’s largest, oldest, and most respected dentist-specific professional liability and business insurance programs.  His professional accomplishments and awards include State Administrator of the Year for the Professional Protector Plan® for Dentists, and membership in Guardian Life Insurance Company’s Leader’s Club and Disability Insurance Inner Circle.

Mr. Gerner lives in Ocean Pines, MD with his wife and 3 kids.  He enjoys fishing, boating, the beach, an occasional ugly round of golf, and spectating sports whether it’s college lacrosse, the Baltimore Ravens, or his kids’ youth lacrosse and soccer games.
